Concrete sleeper retaining walls offer structural performance that timber cannot match at height. They are well-suited to steep residential blocks, sloped commercial sites and civil applications where the wall will be loaded or is at risk from vehicle surcharge.
Davnic Excavations sources concrete sleepers from Icon Walls — a Victorian manufacturer with a broad range of finishes, colours and sizes. Galvanised steel posts are used throughout for longevity.
Installation involves excavating post holes into native soil or rock (we drill rock where required), setting posts and packing each sleeper in sequence. Drainage is installed behind the wall as standard to prevent hydrostatic pressure build-up.

Treated pine retaining walls have a finite lifespan — typically 15 to 25 years depending on soil conditions. Concrete sleeper walls, correctly installed with drainage, are effectively maintenance-free for the life of the property. They don't rot, split or attract pests, and they don't require periodic replacement.
For walls above 800mm in height, concrete sleepers are generally the preferred solution in Victoria's residential market. The additional upfront cost is typically recovered within one replacement cycle of a comparable timber wall.
